World News Today Live Updates: Iran slams Trump’s ‘Economic D-Day’ plan, calls it ‘diversion from America’s own crisis’
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi hit out at US President Donald Trump over his “Economic D-Day” operation, stating that the move was a “diversion from America’s own crisis”. He further criticised Washington for spreading “economic terrorism”, which he said threatens the global economy and sovereignty worldwide. “The so-called “Economic D-Day” is a diversion from America’s own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs. Doubling down on failed policies will only bring further defeat—and enmity of Iranians. US economic terrorism threatens global economy and sovereignty worldwide,” he said in a post on X.
US debt crosses $40 trillion threshold after doubling across Trump and Biden administrations
The total US national debt has surpassed $40 trillion for the first time, the Treasury Department said on Wednesday (Aug 19), as rising interest costs and spending pressures deepen concerns over the country’s fiscal outlook. The Treasury’s latest daily cash and debt balances statement showed total public debt outstanding at $40.047 trillion, which includes $32.266 trillion held by the public and $7.782 trillion in intragovernmental debt. The federal government’s IOU, in less than a decade, has more than doubled, with COVID-19 borrowing, tax policies and long-running spending imbalances driving the rise.
